Cats can't decide if they want the door open or closed, and somehow that becomes your full-time responsibility. A closed door is a problem. An open door is fine for a moment, then suddenly also a problem. The only acceptable state is you standing nearby, ready to adjust it at any second.

They'll sit there staring at the door like something serious is going on. You open it. Nothing happens. They just stand in the doorway, thinking. One paw goes forward, then stops. They look inside, then outside, then back at you like you've made things more complicated. Sometimes they walk halfway through and then come right back, like they changed their mind mid-step.

The second you close it, though, everything becomes urgent. Now they need the door open immediately. Scratching, meowing, acting like they've been locked out for hours. You open it again, and suddenly they're calm, just walking through like it was never a big deal. You close it. Two seconds later, they're back, ready to repeat the exact same process.

It becomes clear they don't actually care about being in or out. They just want the option. And more importantly, they want you to manage the option. You're not deciding anything, you're just there to open and close the door whenever they feel like changing their mind.

You open the door and the cat is already there like the official door greeter on duty. Always in position, always on time, no training required. Just standing there ready to welcome you in like it runs the place. No wagging tail, no excitement, just a calm stare like your arrival has been noted. When you’re a cat pawrent, you can never do anything in peace. The second you close a door, the cat takes it personally like you just excluded them on purpose. Suddenly it’s scratching, staring, full attention on that door. You open it, they might not even come in, but that was not the point. It’s about access, not action. Privacy does not exist when a cat is involved.
